At A. Young Roofing, we install torch-on felt flat roofing for domestic and commercial properties in Morpeth. It’s a well-established flat roofing system made from layers of reinforced bituminous felt, heat-bonded to form a continuous waterproof covering.
A typical system has a number of layers, with the base providing the foundation, reinforced felt adding strength and the mineral-finished top layer helping the roof cope with sunlight and changing weather. The finished roof is suited to many common flat roof applications, including garages, extensions, porches, outbuildings and commercial buildings.
Good preparation is an important part of the job. Before the felt is installed, the roof deck needs to be checked and prepared properly, with particular attention paid to edges, joints, outlets and other areas where water could find its way through. Torch-on felt can also be used when an existing flat roof needs to be replaced.
If you’re considering a new flat roof or replacing an older one, we can assess the roof and explain whether torch-on felt is suitable for the property.

A new flat roof needs more than a waterproof covering. It also needs suitable drainage and properly finished edges, joints and outlets so that rainwater can leave the roof without causing problems.
We install flat roofs for extensions, garages, porches, dormers, outbuildings and commercial properties. The work includes preparing the roof deck, installing the chosen roofing system and completing the details around the perimeter and drainage points.
Replacement may be worth considering where an existing roof has persistent leaks, deteriorating materials, cracking or splitting, or has needed repeated repairs. In some cases, a repair is all that’s required; where the roof has deteriorated more extensively, replacing the covering can be the more sensible option.
Alongside traditional torch-on felt, we install EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass systems where they are appropriate for the roof and its intended use.
Flat roofs are exposed to rain, wind, sunlight and temperature changes throughout the year. Over time, this can lead to damaged felt, cracks, splits, failed joints, damaged flashing or leaks following severe weather.
When repairing a flat roof, it’s important to find out where the water is actually getting in. The visible stain or damaged patch inside the building isn’t necessarily directly below the point where water has entered the roof. Water can travel beneath the covering before it becomes visible.
We inspect the roof to identify the likely source of the problem and then determine whether a local repair is appropriate. Where the existing roof is extensively deteriorated or has reached the end of its serviceable life, we can discuss re-roofing or replacement instead.
It’s worth getting in touch if you’ve noticed damp patches, staining, dripping water, damaged roofing or a leak that keeps returning. Regular checks of the covering, flashing, joints and drainage points can also help identify defects before they become more serious.
Torch-on felt isn’t the only option for a flat roof. We also install EPDM rubber and GRP fibreglass systems where they suit the project.
EPDM is a flexible synthetic rubber membrane supplied in sheets and installed as a continuous weather-resistant covering. GRP uses fibreglass reinforcement and resin to form a hard-wearing roof surface with a seamless finish.
The right choice depends on the roof itself, its size and design, how the space is used and the requirements of the project. We can explain the differences between torch-on felt, EPDM and GRP and advise which systems are suitable.
A flat roof can make some rooms feel darker than you’d like. A suitable roof window, roof lantern, dome light or light tunnel can introduce natural light into extensions, kitchens, bathrooms, garages, offices and other areas.
The opening needs to be properly integrated with the surrounding roof. Poorly finished edges or joints can create a route for water ingress, so the weatherproofing around the window is just as important as the window itself.
If you’re installing a new flat roof or improving an existing room, we can discuss the available options and provide flat roof window installation in Morpeth and the surrounding areas.
If you need a flat roof installed, repaired or replaced, or you’ve noticed a leak or other problem with an existing roof, contact A. Young Roofing to discuss the work and arrange an assessment.
